Cultivating Lent & Holy Week Traditions

As we prepare for Easter Sunday my desire is to give our children tangible ways to remember the Easter story. To do this our family incorporates various teaching tools to experience Holy Week together. These memory making discipleship opportunities create Gospel centric conversations and can even generate new family traditions.

Below I’ve linked my all-time favorite resurrection themed Easter teaching materials with a brief overview of what they include (This list contains two absolutely free resources!). But, the truth is – it only takes one intentional resource to create an organic discipleship opportunity with your child. Although this list is extensive, the scripture and the Holy Spirit in us gives us everything we need to teach our children about Jesus’ death and resurrection!

The Easter Story Egg

The Easter Story Egg is a beautiful heirloom quality Montessori aligned Resurrection teaching tool. This family activity includes a hardcover book and 7 plastic/wood composite nesting eggs. The Story Egg book begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday. Each egg within the set of nesting eggs has a rhyming story that relates to a particular day in Holy Week, leading up to Easter Sunday. As the children open each egg they will discover the Easter story and the journey of Jesus through Holy week. This set is perfect for all ages. The Easter Story Egg retails for $39.99.

Resurrection Eggs

Resurrection Eggs are the perfect way to crack open the glorious story of Jesus’ resurrection. Stored in a plastic carton, a dozen rainbow-hued eggs are filled with surprises. Pop them open and find miniature symbols of Easter inside. An updated companion booklet in English and Spanish features Bible stories explaining the significance of each object. This can be used over 12 days or in one sitting. Each egg contains a religious figurine and its accompanying story telling of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Includes 12 stickers corresponding to the eggs. Ages 5 and up (Choking hazard. Small pieces). Resurrection Eggs retail for $21.99.

A Sense of the Resurrection: An Easter Experience for Families

A Sense of the Resurrection: an Easter Experience for Families is an ebook Easter curriculum that uses the five senses to help you and your children discover what the days surrounding Jesus’ death and resurrection may have been like. Each day, you’ll read a passage of Scripture and then set up a memorial or make a memory to more fully understand the event. Included in the book are printable, coloring flags to help tell the story. This ebook contains 12 fun, hands-on, easy, meaningful activities to help your kids come face to face with the Easter story. It’s easy enough for all-ages, but meaningful enough for parents and kids to have a new understanding and appreciation of the greatest gift God gave us–Jesus, his sacrifice, resurrection and eternal friendship. Download the ebook for $9.99.

The Easter Tree

The Easter Tree is a 14 Day Family Devotional ebook. Each devotion has a scripture reading, some questions, and a prayer prompt. Including a set of 14 Jesus Tree Ornaments – these are hand-drawn images, each one corresponds to a Bible story from the devotions. At least 1 extra activity idea per day. (Crafts, activities, recipes, etc). And extra Resources (recipes, craft instructions, and activity directions are included in the kit). A Last Supper Meal is detailed, step-by-step for making this special meal happen for your family, including a printable for your table decorations. This ebook is FREE!

Easter Story Cards

Easter Story Cards are a free resource! On the front of each card, you’ll find a simple illustration that represents a moment in the Easter story – starting with Palm Sunday and ending with the resurrection. On the back of each card, you’ll find a Scripture reference that you can read as a family, a discussion question, an activity, and a contemporary worship song or hymn. I like to hang these where we typically display Christmas Cards. This beautiful resource can be used throughout Holy Week, and is completely FREE!

  1. […] Pinpoint the best time of day to share the corresponding bible story as Easter week progresses. For some families that time is breakfast, or on the drive to school, snack time, dinner as a family, or during bedtime stories (Note: this might fluctuate depending on family activities or commitments. Knowing these variables can help create a plan for those days). Not sure what to read? Check out our post Cultivating Lent & Holy Week Traditions. […]

  2. […] Lent is often a time of fasting, which is why you might have heard the question posed, “What are you giving up for Lent?” The purpose of fasting during the season of Lent is to aid in the turning of our eyes and hearts to Jesus. The fun part of abstaining from whatever it might be, is that each Sunday of Lent is used as a “mini Easter,” where you are not obligated to hold to your fast. This is used as a reminder of our freedom from sin in Christ Jesus! (For more on this, check out Our Family’s Approach to Lent & Easter & Cultivating Lent & Holy Week Traditions). […]
